I think the fact that it basically does what a damp sponge does, immediately throws obviousness out the window.
It's kinda amazing that people go out and invest the money in such ridiculous patents, given there isn't really a return on the investment. Perhaps patents can also be viewed as a consumption good I.E some do it because they want a patent, rather then looking for a numerical justification.
